Permafrost multiplayer is cooperative. SpaceRocket Games describes the game as "symbiotic 1-4 player co-op survival": play solo or survive alongside up to 3 friends. The Steam page lists Online Co-op as a feature separate from Single-player, and the Early Access FAQ on that same page states that cooperative multiplayer for up to 4 players is fully implemented and functional in the current build.
What the developers implemented
One session holds up to 4 players, and co-op does not simplify the world. The same cold, weather and scarcity apply whether you are alone or in a group.
Everything else carries over unchanged. You play a Rook: an engineer with the skills to rebuild but little wilderness experience, drawn into the frozen, post-apocalyptic world by a radio signal from a long-lost friend. The loop is explore frozen cities and wilderness, survive brutal weather, navigate faction-controlled territories, hunt, scavenge, craft, and build a network of shelters. The developers call the cold your true enemy.
Progression is exploration-gated rather than currency-based: restore abandoned shelters, repair broken machines and reclaim fragile technology to push deeper. A group shares that map work, but not the weather.
Co-op changes preparation, not difficulty
Solo, one player has to keep the fire lit, keep wood banked, keep food coming and still find time to move forward. A group can divide that load instead of stacking it.
- Shelter networks. Progression runs through restoring abandoned shelters, so a group can keep several safe points running along a route instead of retreating to one base every night.
- Divided responsibilities. One player owns the fire and the wood supply, another hunts, another salvages, another scouts ahead. The cold still applies to all of them equally.
- Playing to each other's strengths. Clothing quality is your temperature floor in the wilderness, so the best-clothed player can range furthest while the rest work nearer a heat source.
- The dog companion. Rescued from the ruins, the dog scouts ahead, warns of danger and carries supplies, which takes weight off whoever would otherwise haul everything.
Suggested roles for a 4-player group
These are jobs to assign, not in-game classes: Permafrost has no published class list, so treat the table as a way to divide the same systems.
| Role | Main job | What it protects |
|---|---|---|
| Base keeper | Keeps a lit fire, banks wood, keeps the sleeping spot warm and usable | Energy for everyone, because sleep needs warmth first |
| Hunter | Keeps food coming so Hunger never reaches zero | Prevents the negative effects that start when Hunger runs out |
| Salvager | Scavenges and crafts, feeding building blueprints and recipes | Gear quality, which sets your temperature floor |
| Scout | Pushes into unexplored territory and remembers the route home | Time, because exploration is what gates progression |
Your first shared session
- Pick one base and stock it first. A wood supply and a lit fire are what make sleep possible, and sleep is what keeps Energy usable.
- Agree who carries what before you leave. Stamina drains from sprinting, so nobody should be sprinting home overloaded.
- Leave the starting area early. It is relatively safe, but you will run out of food quickly if you do not move on.
- Build the first night around warmth. Use a settlement that is warm enough to stop Body Warmth draining if you find one, and fall back to a campfire if you do not.
- Split up when a storm rolls in rather than pushing the same direction together.
- Review Effects as a group. They sit in the top left of the Inventory screen, and hovering over a debuff tells you what removes it.
